The Best Dually Trucks of 2026, Ranked

The short answer

For maximum published gooseneck towing, the Ford F-450 pickup leads at 40,000 lbs, followed by the F-350 DRW at 38,000 lbs, Ram 3500 at 36,610 lbs, and the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD and GMC Sierra 3500HD tied at 36,000 lbs. These are properly equipped factory configurations; cab, drivetrain, axle ratio, hitch and remaining payload determine the rating of an individual truck.

What is a dually?

A dually has two wheels on each side of the rear axle. The wider rear footprint supports heavy loads and trailer stability, but also makes parking and narrow trails less convenient. Both 4x2 and 4x4 versions are available. “One-ton” is a class nickname, not a 2,000-lb payload limit.

Do you need a dually?

Start with the actual loaded trailer and its tongue or pin weight. Passengers, cargo, hitch hardware and accessories also consume payload. A single-rear-wheel truck may meet your needs, but a large fifth-wheel or gooseneck can use up its rear-axle or payload allowance before reaching its advertised towing limit. Compare the specific truck’s labels and towing chart rather than using a universal 20,000-lb cutoff.

Dually towing and payload comparison (2026)

The Ford F-350 DRW reaches 38,000 lbs gooseneck and 35,000 lbs fifth-wheel towing with the HO diesel, Regular Cab 4x2 and 4.10 axle. Conventional towing reaches 28,000 lbs with the HO diesel, Crew Cab and 4.10 axle. Its separate 8,000-lb gas payload maximum requires the 6.8L engine and Heavy-Duty Payload Package. The F-450’s 40,000-lb gooseneck rating is a different model and configuration.

The 2026 Ram 3500 offers 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft from its HO 6.7L Cummins and up to 36,610 lbs of diesel towing. Ram lists separate payload maxima of 6,050 lbs with diesel and 7,590 lbs with the 6.4L gas V8.

The Silverado 3500HD and Sierra 3500HD each offer a 470-hp, 975-lb-ft Duramax and up to 36,000 lbs of gooseneck towing. Chevrolet specifies a Regular Cab Long Bed WT 2WD DRW with Max Trailering Package and gooseneck hitch for its maximum. GM’s 2026 fleet guide lists 7,290 lbs maximum payload for each Regular Cab 2WD DRW model; that payload maximum belongs to a different configuration from maximum diesel towing. GM 2026 fleet specifications.

Note: these are separate manufacturer maxima; towing and payload figures must not be read as applying to one build simultaneously. The GM maximum towing figures require the specified DRW diesel configuration and trailering equipment. Payload maxima are model-line figures, not promises for the diesel listed beside them. Cab, drivetrain, trim, axle ratio, options and hitch type matter. Use the VIN-specific towing information, certification label and tire/loading label; check GVWR, both GAWRs, GCWR and hitch limits. How we ranked these trucks

We ranked these five factory pickups by maximum published gooseneck towing: F-450 first, F-350 second, Ram third, and Chevrolet and GMC tied fourth. This is a specification comparison, not a hands-on road test or an assessment of a modified truck. Compare fifth-wheel and conventional ratings separately.

1. Ford F-450 Super Duty DRW

The F-450 pickup offers standard-output and HO 6.7L diesels, with a 10-speed automatic. Its 40,000-lb gooseneck maximum requires Regular Cab 4x2, HO diesel, 4.30 axle and 40K Gooseneck Tow Package (48,000-lb GCWR). Fifth-wheel towing reaches 35,000 lbs; conventional towing reaches 30,000 lbs with the 43,500-lb GCWR configuration, not the 40K package configuration. Ford 2026 model-specific towing chart.

The F-450 pickup has a 14,000-lb GVWR, as do the F-350 DRW configurations in Ford’s technical sheet; do not confuse it with the higher-GVWR F-450 chassis cab. The sheet lists F-450 Regular Cab 4x2 payloads of 6,322 lbs with the standard-output diesel and 6,305 lbs with the HO diesel and package 535. Its wide-track front axle, larger brakes and 19.5-inch wheels distinguish it from the F-350; higher towing capacity does not mean higher payload. Ford pickup specifications, pages 3–4 and 11.

2. Ford F-350 Super Duty DRW

The 2026 engine choices are a 6.8L gas V8 (405 hp, 445 lb-ft), 7.3L gas V8 (430 hp, 485 lb-ft), 6.7L Power Stroke diesel (475 hp, 1,050 lb-ft), and HO diesel (500 hp, 1,200 lb-ft), with a 10-speed automatic. The 38,000-lb gooseneck maximum calls for the HO diesel, Regular Cab 4x2 and 4.10 axle; fifth-wheel towing tops out at 35,000 lbs. Available onboard power and trailer assistance add work-site convenience. Check DRW-specific trim and package availability; do not assume an SRW off-road package applies to a dually.

Ford’s 2026 technical sheet lists F-350 Regular Cab 4x2 diesel payload ratings of 6,952 lbs with the standard-output engine and 6,935 lbs with the HO engine. These differ from the gas payload maximum and are reduced by equipment and accessories. Ford technical specifications.

3. Ram 3500 HD dually

The 2026 Ram uses a 6.4L HEMI gas V8 rated at 405 hp and 429 lb-ft, or the available HO Cummins diesel (430 hp, 1,075 lb-ft) described in the towing comparison above. Both use eight-speed automatics; the diesel gets the TorqueFlite HD. Available rear air suspension and trailer reverse steering assistance are useful features to compare. Ram 2026 capability and powertrains.

=4. Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD dually

The 6.6L gas V8 produces 401 hp and 464 lb-ft; the Duramax output (470 hp, 975 lb-ft) is detailed in the towing comparison above. Both pair with an Allison 10-speed automatic. Available trailering cameras offer up to 14 views, and integrated bed steps help with access. Choose the exact cab, drivetrain and trailering package before comparing capacity or price. Chevrolet 2026 Silverado HD specifications.

=4. GMC Sierra 3500HD dually

The Sierra shares the GM gas and diesel powertrain outputs above, with a 10-speed automatic. Available ProGrade trailering technology, MultiPro tailgate and premium Denali equipment distinguish the shopping experience. Its maximum tow rating ties Chevrolet’s; luxury equipment does not increase capacity. GMC 2026 Sierra HD specifications.

Can you lift a dually?

Yes, with a kit explicitly approved for its year, engine, drivetrain and DRW configuration. Documented examples include a BDS 3-inch system for 2025–2026 Ram 3500 4WD diesel, Ford F-350 diesel systems including a 5-inch dually application, and a 3-inch GM HD system whose dually application requires the 2-inch rear block with overload option. These are manufacturer examples, not Lifted Trucks recommendations or universal tire-clearance guarantees.

A lift does not increase factory GVWR, GAWR or GCWR. Added equipment weight consumes remaining carrying capacity; larger tires and changed suspension geometry can also affect braking, gearing and handling. There is no universal percentage by which a lift changes safe towing capacity. Have the completed combination assessed for its intended load, with alignment, steering, driveline angles, brake-line travel and tire clearance checked.

Measure with the trailer loaded and level. Confirm fifth-wheel bed-rail and cab clearance through turns and uneven ground, or the correct rated drop hitch for a conventional trailer. A taller truck can make proper trailer attitude and clearance harder to achieve. For frequent heavy towing, prioritize the smallest modification that meets the actual need.

Dually wheel and tire fitment

Do not order by “8-lug” alone. Confirm model year, bolt circle, hub bore, mounting seat, wheel position and load rating with the wheel manufacturer. Front, rear outer and rear inner wheels form a matched system; a generic offset value is not a safe shopping specification. F-450 pickup wheels also require separate application checking.

For a 17-inch replacement setup, verify the exact DRW wheel application, brake clearance, approved tire rim width and load capacity. For a 19.5-inch setup, confirm the pickup-specific wheel and hub application and a compatible commercial tire; diameter alone does not make an F-450 wheel fit a one-ton pickup. For a 20-inch aftermarket setup, confirm the complete front, inner and outer package, approved tire width, dual spacing, load ratings and fender clearance.

As one documented example, DDC’s Aftermath 20×8.25 package specifies tires up to 12.50 inches wide without rear dual spacers and lists cast-wheel ratings of 3,500 lbs front and 3,250 lbs rear per wheel. That product specification does not establish clearance or payload for every truck. Confirm the exact package and tire together.

Use the tire manufacturer’s approved rim widths, dual-service load data, inflation guidance and minimum dual spacing. The rear tires must not contact each other under load. Check steering lock, suspension compression and fender coverage; flares do not fix tire-to-tire contact. Michelin’s fitment guidance explains why size changes require wheel, clearance, load and dual-spacing checks.

Which dually fits which job?

For the heaviest gooseneck loads in this comparison, start with the F-450’s 40,000-lb maximum, then confirm the exact configuration and pin-weight allowance. The F-350 reaches 38,000 lbs gooseneck; both Ford models reach 35,000 lbs fifth-wheel in specified configurations. The GM twins offer up to 14 available camera views, while Sierra Denali and Ram Limited provide premium cabin options. Features and luxury equipment vary by configuration and do not increase capacity.

Available 2.0-kW Pro Power Onboard on Ford Super Duty provides electrical power for tools and equipment at the job site. Match the truck to the primary use case first, then check that its specific cab, drivetrain and axle configuration meets the actual trailer weight before purchasing.

Buying a dually from Lifted Trucks

Ask for the specific truck’s factory configuration, installed suspension and wheel/tire part numbers, alignment documentation and loaded towing suitability. Match that build to your trailer before purchasing.

FAQ

What is the best dually in 2026? For maximum published gooseneck towing among these pickups, the F-450 leads; the F-350 leads the one-ton models covered here. For an individual buyer, loaded trailer weight, payload and configuration determine the better choice.

How much can a dually tow? The maxima in this comparison range from 36,000 to 40,000 lbs, but many configurations are rated lower. Conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings differ.

Is a dually worth it over SRW? It can be when the load requires its added capacity and stability. Account for width, maneuverability and the cost of six tires.

Can you lift one? Yes, using a verified DRW application and checking the completed truck and trailer combination. A lift is not a capacity upgrade.

Do duallys get worse fuel economy? Extra weight, tire losses, gearing and trailer drag can increase fuel use. Do not present an EPA city/highway estimate for these HD pickups without an applicable official rating; real results depend strongly on load and use.
