Which Lifted Trucks Can Tow Over 12,000 Pounds?

If you need to tow 12,000 pounds or more, you have two groups of lifted trucks to choose from: a few well-equipped half-tons, and every heavy-duty diesel or gas pickup. The Ford F-150, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 can reach that mark when equipped correctly. The Ram 2500 and 3500, the Ford F-250 and F-350, and the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra HD models clear it with room to spare. A lift kit does not change the factory tow rating printed on the truck, but it does change how you should build and drive the rig. The sections below cover which trucks qualify and what to check before you hitch up.

What towing capacity means on a lifted truck

Every manufacturer rates its trucks for a maximum trailer weight under specific conditions. The rating depends on engine, axle ratio, cab and bed configuration, drivetrain, and the towing package installed at the factory. Ford states that its maximum towing varies with cargo, configuration, accessories and passenger count, and it notes that maximum payload and towing may not be reached at the same time. Treat any headline number as a ceiling for one exact configuration. The sticker on the driver's door jamb and the manufacturer's towing guide for your model year are the final authority.

Lifting a truck does not rewrite that rating. It does change real-world towing dynamics. Larger tires add rotating mass and can alter effective gearing, so many builders re-gear the axles. Hitch height also changes. Our own guide to real-world towing tips for lifted trucks covers drop hitches, tongue weight of 10 to 15 percent of trailer weight, brake upgrades and tire load ratings in more detail.

Half-ton lifted trucks that can tow over 12,000 pounds

The 2026 Ford F-150 is the clearest half-ton example. Ford lists a maximum conventional tow rating of 13,500 pounds for the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 in a 4x4 SuperCrew. That figure requires the Max Tow/Haul Package and the optional Max Tow axle upgrade. The 5.0L V8 is rated at 12,800 pounds, which also clears 12,000. The 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid tops out at 11,600 pounds in 4x4 form, and the 2.7L EcoBoost at 8,200 to 8,400 pounds, so neither qualifies. A lifted F-150 with the right engine and package is a strong choice for a large travel trailer or a loaded car hauler.

The Ram 1500 does not reach the mark. Stellantis lists its maximum tow rating at 11,610 pounds with the 3.0L Hurricane engine. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 have max ratings above 12,000 pounds on select configurations. The Toyota Tundra sits right at the line, with a maximum of about 12,000 pounds on some configurations and lower on its hybrid. If your trailer weighs exactly 12,000 pounds, a Tundra leaves no margin, so look at a truck with more headroom.

Heavy-duty lifted trucks for 12,000 pounds and beyond

If you tow near or above 12,000 pounds on a regular basis, a heavy-duty truck is the better tool. Ram lists a maximum towing capacity of 20,000 pounds for the 2026 Ram 2500 and 36,610 pounds for the 2026 Ram 3500. The top figure comes with the High-Output 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel, which Ram rates at 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque.

The Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty reach even higher with the right powertrain and gooseneck or fifth-wheel package. According to Ford's towing guide, the F-250 is rated up to 22,000 pounds conventional and 23,000 pounds on a gooseneck, while the F-350 reaches up to 40,000 pounds on properly equipped dually configurations with the High Output diesel and the 40K Gooseneck Package. The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD and the GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD with the Duramax diesel and Allison transmission are also built for this work, offering up to 20,000 pounds conventional on 2500HD models and up to 36,000 pounds gooseneck on 3500HD dually configurations.

These ratings often depend on gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitches and, in the largest cases, dual rear wheels. A 12,000-pound conventional bumper-pull is well inside a heavy-duty truck's comfort zone. How a lift kit, tires and gearing affect a 12,000-pound tow

A modest lift of 2 to 4 inches paired with correctly rated tires is usually easy to tow with. Taller lifts and oversized tires put more demand on brakes, transmissions and cooling. Four areas matter most.

  • Tires and wheels. Choose a load range suited to the combined weight of the truck and trailer. E-load and F-load tires are common for heavy towing.

  • Brakes. Larger tires increase the work your brakes do. Upgraded rotors and pads, plus a properly adjusted trailer brake controller, help.

  • Gearing. Re-gearing after a big tire swap restores pulling power and keeps the transmission out of constant hunting.

  • Hitch and suspension. A drop hitch rated well above the loaded trailer weight keeps the trailer level. Heavy-duty springs, quality shocks or air bags help control rear squat.

Weight limits still apply after a lift. Never exceed the truck's GVWR, GAWR or GCWR, because those limits stay the same whatever you bolt on. Aftermarket parts also add weight, which comes out of your payload and can reduce the tongue weight you can safely carry.

Matching the truck to the trailer

Start with the loaded weight of the trailer, not its dry weight. A two-horse bumper pull may weigh around 5,000 pounds loaded, while a four-horse gooseneck with living quarters can reach 14,000 pounds or more, as we outline in our guide to the best tow rigs for horse owners. Add passengers, cargo and hitch hardware to the truck side of the equation. Then pick a truck whose rating exceeds your real towing weight with a healthy buffer. A diesel heavy-duty truck gives the most headroom for frequent or mountain towing, and an equipped half-ton fits occasional towing near 12,000 pounds.

Frequently asked questions

Does lifting a truck reduce its towing capacity? The manufacturer's tow rating does not change because of a lift. Handling, braking feel and effective gearing can change, so plan upgrades around your tire size and trailer weight.

Can a half-ton lifted truck tow 12,000 pounds? Some can, such as a properly equipped Ford F-150 rated at 12,800 or 13,500 pounds. Check the exact configuration and package.

What is the best lifted truck for towing over 12,000 pounds? For regular heavy towing, a diesel Ram 2500 or 3500, Ford Super Duty, or Silverado or Sierra HD gives the most capability and margin.
